Written By Sonali Chowdhury, Hollywood Story

It has been a year of record-breaking hits in Hollywood. The industry earned a whopping $10.8 billion in the year and saw a huge surge in ticket sales after years of steady declines. The eventful year saw caped superheroes ruling the roost; blockbuster franchises reaching their epic conclusions and some over-hyped tales fall flat on their faces. We give you the annual Rockying Hollywood wrap up for the year that has passed us by.

The Age Of The Super Hero

Hollywood Super Heroes

Comic book wonders ruled the silver screen this year. The two biggest blockbusters of the year The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises are both testimony to the box office draw of the genre, earning over a billion dollars each in revenue and ending up as the two biggest movies of the year.

Sequels and Reboots

Hollywood Sequels

Hollywood continued its obsession with milking its successful franchises dry with their movie machines churning out innumerable sequels in 2012. The formula seems to be working for them though, with movies like Men in Black 3, Madagascar 3 and Ice Age: Continental Drift all earning big bucks at the box office.Sky fall continued the James Bond franchise forward and ended up as the third highest grosser of the year and even reboots of past successes like the Andrew Garfield starrer Amazing Spider Man received audience approval.

Beginnings and Endings

Series Finale Movies

The year saw some movies that could well prove to be the starting point of blockbuster franchises in the future. The Avengers already has two sequels lined up while the hit Hunger Games and the long awaited The Hobbit would also see more movies in the future. However, two of the biggest names in recent movie history reached their conclusion in 2012, with The Dark Knight Rises and Twilight: Breaking Dawn 2 drawing the curtains on their megahit movie series.

The Damp Squibs

Though the year was phenomenally successful, it had its own share of flops. The hugely hyped John Carter proved to be a disaster for makers Disney early in the year, losing a whopping 164 million dollars for the studio. The Tom Hanks starrer Cloud Atlas proved to be too complicated for its audience and died a quick death at the box office. The toast of Hollywood for the last few years, Johnny Depp, also saw his only release of the year Dark Shadows tank within a week of release.
